Faith & The Workplace - Titus

If you ever wonder how our faith is to function in the workplace, read the book of Titus!  It gives very clear instruction on who we are to be.

For example, we are to “show integrity, seriousness and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned,”… be “self-controlled, upright, holy and disciplined…”, “be subject to their masters in everything, to try to please them, not to talk back to them, and not to steal from them, but to show that they can be fully trusted, so that in every way they will make the teaching about God our Savior attractive.”

Of note, “self-control” is repeatedly mentioned!  It doesn’t mean hold back your anger, and answer with a smile.  It actually means, that the Truth of God within us regulates and moderates our interaction to the world.  In other words, we are to be commanded and regulated by God, and not our own nature - and bless the world!  This is Godly balance.  This is the win-win goal, but regulated by the character of Christ-likeness.

To our surprise, Paul’s instruction does not seem to emphasize that this will involve the obtaining of solutions and peace to workplace problems and stress!  However, it does emphasize godliness and blamelessness in our life within society.  It will require endurance, perseverance which can only be obtained as we operate this way in anticipation of eternal life, the blessed hope, the return of Jesus Christ!
