Thoughts for the day from Mathew 7...
28 When Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were amazed at his teaching, 29 because he taught as one who had authority, and not as their teachers of the law.
Matthew the gospel writer ends the greatest sermon that was ever preached in the history of mankind with these words. Jesus' audience were amazed at His teachings. But according to today's text, it was actually the AUTHORITY with which He taught that truly amazed them. So what is this authority? What was it about the way that Jesus taught that set Him apart from the teachers of the law? Well, authority is synonymous with power - and they both come from the Father. There was something, however, about the way that Jesus taught that made His power and authority evident and visible. In other words, it was the way that the power and authority of the Heavenly Father manifested in His life that the people noticed. There was obviously a literal SPIRITUAL power and authority that was evident. But I believe that it was the congruency between what He taught and the way that actually lived His life that presented the greatest evidence of that spiritual power and authority. Congruency of life = power and authority. #desiringGod2017
