Andy Kang is Going to Asia!

Asia is a very big place.

In the course of 6 weeks, I will be travelling to China, Thailand, and Japan. It's going to be crazy. It's already been crazy. In the best possible ways.

The confluence of events and circumstances that has led to me going on this trip now has been both a long time coming and unexpected. The story of this trip starts nearly seven years ago in early 2010. Having flunked out of school a few months prior, I had no real idea of what to do with my life, and as I was contemplating my life God very clearly spoke to me, telling me to go back to school, specifically, to study cybersecurity. The world wasn't getting any less dependant on the internet, and God's church wasn't an exception. It was clear that online security was and would be a crucial need that wasn't really being addressed.

So I went back to school. And now, seven years later, I'm finally finishing school. Finally. Throughout the last seven years, I had no idea what doing cybersecurity "for God" would look like in a practical sense. It all seemed extremely far off and abstract, impossible even. So I just didn't think about it for a long time.

“See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship," – Exodus 31:2-3

And then suddenly, a bunch of doors were opened seemingly all at once. And now I have this opportunity to go to Asia literally 2 weeks after I finally finish school, to do cybersecurity "for God." Last few weeks, in addition to preparing for finals, I've been working on creating a suite of services based in the US in order to be able to provide secure VPN, secure messaging and email, and other services to missionaries so that they can maintain privacy with regards to sensitive information. It's been both challenging and fun.

This whole trip has come together in the last couple months, and I am kinda blown away by the opportunity. It is the beginning of the the fulfillment of God's promise. That said, I still don't really know where this is all going to lead but at this point I'm just trusting God. Being done with school and not having a job lined up, there is no good reason for me not to go. So I'm going.

I will be flying out on January 4th and returning February 17th. The majority of my time will be spent in Thailand, but will also be in China for a few days, and Japan for about two weeks with Sam Won (see his blog post here!). I'm super excited about seeing what God will do, and for the opportunity to see what the culmination of the last 7 years is. Because as exciting as this trip is, I don't want this to be culmination. What that will be, who knows. But I'm excited.

Practically speaking, I'm raising support to go on this trip. If you'd like to support me financially, please visit my gofundme for more updates on my trip. I bought plane tickets in faith, trusting God that he'd provide. Please consider supporting me not just financially but I'd also appreciate prayer. For things to go smoothly/safely and for where this all might or could lead.

Thanks so much for reading!
